School security guard in court for shooting two teens

A security guard has a appeared in court allegedly shooting dead one teenager and injuring another

A 62-year-old security guard appeared in court after he allegedly shot dead a 13-year-old over the school WI-Fi. The guard who made his first appearance at the Lusikisiki Magistrates in the Eastern Cape, faces charges of murder, attempted murder, possession of a prohibited firearm and illegal possession of ammunition.


CONNECTING TO WIFI


Eastern Cape SAPS spokesperson, Colonel Priscilla Naidu confirmed the incident and said that on 23 May, just after 6pm, about seven children went to Matafeni Junior Secondary School to get access to the Wi-Fi. "The security guard in question noticed the group inside the school premises and started chasing them. The guard fired at them and shot at two boys. One boy, aged 13, died at the scene, while the other boy, also aged 13, sustained gunshot wounds and was taken to hospital," said Naidu.


SWIFT ARREST


Naidu said after shooting, the security guards fled the scene, but was arrested later that same evening. The Eastern Cape provincial commissioner, Lieutenant General Nomthetheleli Mene, condemned the incident and expressed sadness. "The suspect is arrested and the matter will be thoroughly investigated to ensure that justice is served. Our condolences to the families and the community during this difficult time. We wish the injured teenager a speedy recovery. This incident is a reminder of the critical importance of appropriate responses in security situations," Mene said. Naidu said the matter was postponed for formal bail application
