A 21-year-old University of Fort Hare student who was hit by a police Nyala, over a week ago during the Springbok trophy tour victory parade in East London in the Eastern Cape, has died. The Department of Health in the province confirmed that Minentle Noqhamka died at the Frere Hospital on Tuesday. Minentle's legs were crushed during the accident and one of her legs was amputated last week.
SA Rugby has extended its condolences to Minentle's family. In a statement, SA Rugby confirmed that they received news of a fan whose legs were crushed by a police vehicle during the last round of the trophy tour. SA Rugby President Mark Alexander said, "SA Rugby is deeply saddened by the news of a tragic incident during the festivities celebrating South Africa's 2023 Rugby World Cup victory tour. We extend our heartfelt condolences to Minentle Noqhamka's family and friends after her life was so abruptly cut short by this terrible accident," he said. Minentle's father Sithembiso Noqhamka told News24 that they received information that Minentle had gone to East London for shopping when she decided to join in the celebration at the City Hall. "She was knocked by the police nyala on her legs and her left leg was amputated. It is very sad for us as a family. We are still trying to come to terms with her tragic passing," Sithembiso was quoted.
Alexandra said no one would have prepared themselves for such news during a joyous time. "The trophy tour celebration was to share the joy of success and victory to have it end in sorrow for this family is awful. We share the family's grief." According to provincial police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Siphokazi Mawisa, a case of reckless and negligent driving was opened by the East London police. "It is alleged the victim was coming out of the city hall premises when she jumped on a vehicle that was moving. It was when she got injured. The 20-year-old woman was taken by the paramedics to the hospital for further treatment," Mawisa said.
