He allegedly buried his 88-year-old grandmother in a shallow grave in their backyard after she died following a sickness three weeks ago. A 32-year-old man from Tseseng village outside Bloemfontein claimed he did all this because he did not have money to bury his grandmother. It is reported that the granny was last seen by neighbours on 23 June 2023.
Free State SAPS spokesperson Warrant Officer Mmako Mophiring said the police were alerted by community members who became worried when they didn't see the gogo for days and reported her missing. "Police together with the community including Anti-Stock Theft members began with the search. The grandson started running away from the community and police upon realising that they were searching for his granny,'" Mophiring said.
Mophiring said the team of investigators finally caught the young man who was questioned about his actions. "It was established that he buried the granny's body inside the yard. It is alleged that the granny was sick and passed on. The grandson, therefore without burial money, decided to bury the old woman without informing family members or the police even though he collected the granny's pension money," Mophiring added. He said the Bloemfontein K9 Unit, Bloemfontein Local Criminal Record Centre together with Tseseng police successfully exhumed the body of the granny. The suspect was arrested and charged with defeating the ends of justice and violation of a corpse. Mophiring said that a post-mortem is yet to be conducted to establish the cause of death.
