Forensic officer who processed Senzo Meyiwa's murder scene faces cross-examination

Advocate Zandile Mshololo is one of the defence attorneys who will cross examine Mosia

As the Senzo Meyiwa murder trial continues, the state called in another witness from the South African Police Service, a forensic expert Sergeant Thabo Mosia. Mosia who is a forensic expert was a constable at the time of Meyiwa's murder and was promoted to sergeant and recently to a warrant officer in Secunda in Mpumalanga. He will be facing cross-examination from the defence of the five accused.

SCENE WAS ATTENDED AFTER MIDNIGHT

Mosia told the court that he attended the scene just after midnight and it had been cordoned off. "I contacted senior officer, the late Captain Mathebula, and explained the crime scene to him and he suggested we should use provincial crime scene management. I then continued to the crime scene and protected the exhibits on the floor," Mosia said adding that, "I packaged the exhibits and then waited for the task team. I was on standby for four police stations that evening. While I was waiting, I received a call about a business robbery in Zonkizizwe and an arson case in Vosloorus," he told the court. Mosia said he then informed his seniors and handed the scene over to them and then left to attend to the two cases while the exhibits from Kelly Khumalo's Vosloorus home scene were in his car. "I left the scene around 1h30 am and that was after the arrival of the task team. We held a debriefing meeting with them to inform them of what I had done and thereafter, we conducted a walk-through of the scene. We started processing the crime scene before I handed it over to them," he added. Mosia said he went back to the scene at around 6am. Mosia also mentioned Colonel Mohlahlo, who was responsible for taking pictures, and told the court that he would be using the images as he gives his evidence. Mohlahlo will also be called in to testify.

LANGUAGE BARRIER

Mosia gave evidence as the first witness last year in the old trial. At the time, he told the court that he preferred giving his evidence in English the but then he would speak his home language, Sotho during cross-examinations. Judge Tshivhiwa Maumela who was presiding over the matter before being suspended noticed that Mosia was having difficulties following questions asked in English. "I know that you have been testifying in English. As you know, all of us can speak English to a certain point but we all have limits. If it comes to where you need interpretation, it won't be a wrong thing to ask for interpretation. It is upon you to say now I need an interpreter so that you testify freely," Maumela said in April last year. Mosia agreed to a Sotho interpreter then. He is back on the stand this morning.
