The 14 men accused of raping eight women last month in Krugersdorp, during a video shoot appeared briefly at the Krugersdorp Magistrate Court on charges of sexual assault and robbery with aggravating circumstances. A 15 year-old is amongst the accused but his identity has to be protected as he is a minor. The accused are set to to go for DNA testing hence the case was postponed.
LIVING IN FEAR
The court was a hive of activity with political parties and religious groups gathering outside court. The incident had a huge impact on the community as following the horrific incident, the community came out to disclose the horror they had been experiencing at the hands of zama zamas. Women claimed they lived in daily fear and amongst the very men that rape them. They said the perpetrators had no shame or remorse about their actions and given a chance they'd repeatedly rape them. Some women said they were raped more than once and they knew where their abusers lived. They said the police failed them and claimed its because the police got "cold drink" money from the zama zamas.
MAKING PROGRESS
Three weeks ago police minister Bheki Cele said there was progress in the case as investigators obtained video footage from the day of the incident. He said the production company that hired the women for the shoot had not come forward to give their own statements. The matter will be back in court on the 28 of October.
