He is the son of 999 Music mogul and former Kwaito star Arthur Mafokate, and is meant to take on the reigns of his father's empire. A DJ and producer in his own right and now reality TV star, AJ Mafokate, says navigating fame with a famous father who made many controversial headlines has not been easy.

THE LEGACY

He was born into fame and with a silver spoon, but he also longs to prove himself as not just a 'daddy's boy' but also a talented DJ. Overall, he enjoys the limelight, although it comes with its challenges. AJ says being born into fame is about being a part of a legacy, something that is bigger than you. "You are born into something that is already established, and there are so many opportunities that come with it," he says. "Especially for someone in my industry."

FILLING BIG SHOES

However, he says, there are also disadvantages, like being overshadowed by your parents' success. "Things that are sometimes in the news have a direct impact on my career," he says. "People overlook us and just focus on the things that are said about our father. There is a lot of pressure to continue the legacy my dad built." AJ says his dad started his legacy from scratch, and it is his wish for me to continue it. "There are big shoes to fill, and it makes me a little nervous."

FINDING HIMSELF

Although he is in the music industry, both in front of and behind the scenes, he is still uncertain if this is his calling. "Music is just a big part of my life; if I were not a musician, I would probably be a businessman and an entrepreneur," he says. "I also have interests in psychology and engineering, so it would be something along those lines."
